Control of posture
A detailed study of the visuo-vestibular control of body orientation during movements has been carried out and a conceptual scheme based on detailed analysis of the response of the brainstem-spinal cord has been developed. This model can account for the neural bases of this control system, which clearly is of critical importance for locomotion. The different components from the visuo-vestibular input and the descending commands to the spinal cord are in focus.
It appears that the same type of mechanism operates in the lamprey and in mammals with regard to the orientation of the head. In mammals, however, both during standing and walking, the orientation of the limbs also play an important role, which currently is being analysed in considerable deta
